Distance
Ben and Tarka will cover 1800 miles starting from Scott's Terra Nova Hut at the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole and back to the coast again. That's equivalent to 69 back-to-back marathons hauling up to 200kg each (the weight of roughly two adult men) of kit and supplies necessary to survive.
Distances here are shown in statute miles.
The journey through Iceland
With Ben and Tarka now safely on the ice, Tem and I have returned to London to share Ben's promised pictures of our journey over the weekend.
From Reykjavik we covered roughly 240 miles (386kms) through stunning mountain vistas and the odd snowdrift to Akuyeri in Northern Iceland (the expedition gateway to Greenland) where we waved Ben and Tarka onwards on the next stage of their journey...
A massive thank you to Karl and BL.is for the loan of a Land Rover Discovery in Iceland to make the journey as comfortable as it was.
